Allah gave Prophet Ibrahim (PBAH) a son named Ismael after a long life without children. Prophet Ibrahim (PBAH) kept dreaming that he is sacrificing (slaughtering) his son. From these dreams, Prophet Ibrahim (PBAH) knew it was Allah's command. So, he (PBAH) told his son about his dreams. Prophet Ismael responded it's Allah's command so we must obey. Prophet Ibrahim (PBAH) obeyed Allah's command to sacrifice his beloved son and he prepared to slaughter his only son with a heavy heart.

Prophet Ibrahim and Prophet Ismael refused to listen to anyone and didn't obey Satan. He and his son didn't want anything except obeying Allah's command. Because of his obedience to Allah's command and order, before sacrificing his son, Allah send a Lamb instead. Allah sent the lamb to sacrifice it instead of Prophet Ismael. That's why Muslims sacrifice in Eid Al-Adha, of course, who can afford it.
